How much does a wrought iron balustrade cost?

The infill weighs more on the bill than the structure itself — here are the four items that make up the price, and what moves them.

There’s no fixed catalogue rate for a custom wrought iron balustrade — every quote starts from a real project. But the price always breaks down the same way, and four factors explain almost all the gap between a €250 quote and a €650 quote per linear metre.

The infill: the factor that weighs the most

Price is per linear metre, and it’s the infill — what fills the piece between the uprights — that moves the bill the most:

  • Straight balusters: €250 – €350 / lm — the simplest, most affordable infill.
  • Panels (sheet metal, cables, glass): €350 – €550 / lm — a contemporary register, low maintenance.
  • Wrought iron scrollwork: €450 – €650 / lm — ornate pattern, hot-worked, the most decorative.
  • Handrail only: €80 – €150 / lm — wall-mounted or added to an existing structure.

See the full breakdown on our pricing page and our infill and patterns page to understand what each style actually involves.

The total length

The most obvious factor, and also the one that weighs most on the final amount: an 8-metre balustrade logically costs more than a 3-metre one, for the same infill. That’s why a precise on-site measurement survey is the first step of any serious quote.

The number of angles

A straight balustrade is simpler to fabricate and fit than one that follows a path with several angles or a curve (a common case on a curved staircase or an L-shaped terrace). Every angle adds cutting and assembly time in the workshop.

The fixing method

Wall fixing (uprights anchored to a wall or facade) is generally simpler than fixing to freestanding posts, which requires anchor plates and careful rust-proofing at ground level — see our guard-rail regulations page for what the rules require here.

What isn’t included in these figures

These figures cover fabrication of the structure and infill — not fitting, which is quoted separately depending on the setup and site access. The finish (galvanising, powder-coating) is a line item of its own, particularly decisive for a terrace or balcony balustrade exposed to weather year-round.
